§ BASICS OF LOGGING INTO THE CHAT

Your nickname will be your Council of Elrond site name. If you would like to register a nickname (make it so that others can't use that name) that is not already taken, see below. If your nickname is registered, however, you must identify yourself to the chat server. See the information below on identifying a nickname.

Please note: Even if you register your nickname, you have to identify at least once every 45 days. If you don't, the chat server will cancel your registration. In order to reclaim your nick, register it again using the same procedure.

§ DO I HAVE TO ACCESS THE CHAT THROUGH THE JAVA APPLET?

No, the java applet is actually connecting to an IRC server. If you prefer to use an IRC client like mIRC, then you only need to connect to irc.fractured.net or irc.villageirc.net (any port). The name of the room is #councilfree, #council, #councilrpg or #councilrealms

§ WHAT DO THE DIFFERENT SMILEY FACES NEXT TO PEOPLES NAMES MEAN?

Most chatters will have a normal smiley face next to their name. The chatters with a smiley that has sunglasses on are chat moderators. They have the ability to kick you, ban you, and various other things. Be nice, and do what they tell you. Do not ask continuously to become an op; the only channel oeprators are Council of Elrond Staff members.

The person with a Thumbs up icon is the Chat Admin - Saurid (send PM if you need assistance) or, on rare occassions, the Site Owner - Rivka.

The mods are here for the benefit of the other chatters, so if you do have questions about the chat or the site, feel free to ask them.

§ HOW DO I CHANGE MY CHAT NAME?

When you first log into chat your user name will be the same as the one you use on site, you can change this. Type /nick new name

§ HOW DO I DO ACTIONS AND INTERACTIONS?

We have some actions already programmed into the chat, to do one of these click on the "actions" button, then click on the action you want to do, It will show up as red text. To do an action not on the list such as: "Rivka starts kicking herself in the head". Type /me starts kicking herself in the head.

Interactions are things like "k hugs the_witch_queen". To do this you can either type /me hugs the_witch_queen or click once on someones name, then press the interactions button and choose the interaction. This will show up as red text.

§ I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT FLAMING AND SPAMMING ARE.

Flaming and spamming are against our chat rules, you will get kicked out if you do either of these.

Flaming is being rude or abusive in chat, writing all in capital letters is considered flaming because it's the internet equivalent of shouting.

Spamming is filling the chat up with nonsense, not following the thread of chat, posting lots of links or writing lots of small sentences one after the other. This is annoying as people then have to scroll up chat to work out what is going on.

§ HOW DO I PRIVATE CHAT WITH SOMEONE?

Either double click on the persons user name. or type /msg name and message. This will bring up a small separate window on their screen. You can ignore private chats by pressing the "ignore" button on the private chat window.

§ HOW DO I REGISTER MY NICKNAME?

Click the register button, fill in the password and your e mail- this has to be a real e mail. Make sure that when you are registering you are using the name you wish to register. For more information on nickserv functions click here.

§ HOW DO I IDENTIFY MYSELF?

If your nickname is not registered in chat, you must do so before you can identify. When you sign into chat or if you change name and then change back you will be asked for your password again. You can either press the identify box and put your password in that way, or type /msg nickserv identify password -- The only thing you need to replace in that command is the password. You would put in your actual password you used to register the nick.

§ WHAT DO THE WHOIS AND NICKINFO BUTTONS DO?

Whois and nickinfo aren't of much use to normal chatters, you can highlight a persons user name and then click whois or nickinfo, that will tell you a little about the type of chat they are using, if the name is registered and various other bits.

§ HOW DO I MOVE ROOMS AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM?

We have four rooms here at Council of Elrond. When you first log into chat you can choose the room from the drop down menu. Once you are in chat, if you want to move you can either press the channels button then choose your room, or type /join #roomname.

#councilfree is where most people are most of the time, its for chat about any topics, for instance what film you have just been to see, what you are up to at the weekend, anything that springs to mind…as long as it doesn't break chat rules.

#council is for specific talk on Tolkien or for site business. For instance, when a new film comes out and not everyone has had the chance to see it you will probably be asked to chat in #council to avoid spoiling it for everyone else.

#councilrpg is for role playing. Please do not use this room for normal chatting, this is designed for people to role play in real time.

#councilrealms is a meeting ground for the realms of CoE to meet and hang out.
